All The Cables You Need To Connect Your Audio Components.

For want of a nail the kingdom was lost; so says the old proverb. And it comes down to the lowly cable and adapter to connect your audio components to themselves and you your computer.

Stereo components still use RCA jacks and computers use 3.5mm (1/8") stereo jacks. You need 1/4" stereo and mono jacks to 1/8" and the same in reverse. Headphone extension cables and Y adapters to connect 2 components where only one could connect before are essential.

I've put all the cables and adapters you're likely to need on this one page plus be sure to check out my "For Want Of A Nail" Essential Cable Collection where I've grouped 12 of the most useful cables and adapters you're ever likely to need in one money-saving, great to have pack. Click Here to see my collection. Or just buy the cables and adapter you need. Here's the handy instant index just below this line.

Either way, your musical kingdom won't be lost once you have a collection of cables and adapters to make, join, extend and adapter whatever musical components from Walkmans, DAT Decks and turntables to amplifiers, computers or anything that has jacks.

Understanding Audio Cables & Adapters
And How To Connect To Your Computer.
A quick Primer on Cables.

OK, this is all you need to know. The cable on the left is called an RCA Patch Cord. It uses 2 RCA Plugs, 1 plug for each channel. It plugs into RCA Jacks. (Plugs are male and jacks are female) The pugs with the prong in the center and the rim around them are called RCA plugs.

The cable in the middle is a 3.5mm (or 1/8") mini stereo plug. This is the newer cable that's used in your computer and most headphone and mike jacks today. It's still stereo, but both channels are on the same prong as you can see in my picture. G is the Ground, R is the right channel and L is the left channel. Now you know how they get stereo out of one jack.

The cable on the right is called a ¼" Phono plug. It's the same as the 3.5mm jack, just bigger. It's the type that's been used for headphones for years and in pro mikes as well. (Of course with Mics it's mono so there is only one stripe or section plus the ground.)

Next.

Here's the way into your computer's sound card. Your computer will look like this when you go to the back. You will plug the cable we sent you with the Interface Mixer into this BLUE Jack.

The Blue Jack is the Line In. The Pink Jack is for a Microphone. If your jack isn't blue, look for the little picture with the concentric circles with the arrow pointing in. That's the other way of identifying this jack. Your speakers are plugged in the Green jack. There may be other jacks, but these are the only 3 you care about for recording.

Next

So you are either going to plug your Turntable or Cassette Deck into the A side of DAK's Interface Mixer. Turntables always have RCA jacks and their cables already connected, so just plug them in.

Your cassette deck or stereo system will have outputs that look like these. These are called RCA Jacks and you just plug any standard RCA patch cord into the OUT or PLAY jacks and the other end into the A Jacks on the Interface Mixer.
Next

What If Your Cassette Deck Doesn't Have Line Out RCA Jacks?

OK so you're using a portable Boombox, Walkman or Stereo System without RCA Line Out Jacks.

No Problem. Virtually all portables and stereo systems have headphone out jacks as I've pictured above. You can just plug a cable into the jack and the other end into the A jacks on the Interface Mixer and you're all set to go.

Just use a cable with either a 3.5mm (1/8") or 1/4" jack on one end depending on which jack you have on your deck and RCA Jacks on the other end to plug into our Interface Mixer.

The 3.5mm (1/8") 6' cable with RCA jacks on the other end to plug into the Interface Mixer is $6.95 ($2 P&H)

The 1/4" (that's actually an adapter on a 3.5mm jack so you can use it for either jack) 6' cable with RCA Jacks at the other end to plug into the Interface Mixer is $8.95 ($2 P&H).

There's no loss or problem using cables and adapters. So just grab what you need and get ready for great sounds when you connect your stereo components using DAK's Interface Mixer to your computer, or for any other audio use.

It's a really common problem. You want to send a signal to two components from one source. Or, you want to combine two outputs into one input.

Our RCA to RCA Y Adapter makes it fast and easy. RCA jacks are single channel. It takes 2 jacks to make stereo, Left and Right.

These Y Adapters have an RCA male plug for each channel at one end, (see the right side of the picture) and two female RCA Jacks at the other end. So just plug your 2 sources or outputs into the female jacks and then plug the single RCA Plug for each channel into your input or output and you're all set.

You get a pair of Y adapters. The pair handles both right and left channels so just buy one pair for each stereo signal you want to combine. That's a quantity of 1 when you click the button.

Loop 3.5mm (1/8) Stereo Adapter

What's a loop cable? OK we've just found a few computers that don't have the traditional "what you hear - stereo mix - wave out" ability to record from the Internet.

Even computers with Win 95 had this but some sound cards seem to have just left it out. So does that mean you can't record from the Internet?

Not without a loop cable. What does it do? It takes the output from your computer BEFORE it goes to your speakers and sends it into the LINE input of your computer. That's it. Just plug one male end into your speaker jack and the other male end into your line in jack.

Then plug your speakers into the 3rd jack you see which is a female jack for your speakers. There's nothing to open or do. Just plug it in and start recording from the Internet. I've got them for just $6.95 ($3 P&H) Order No. 3036. CA res add tax. It's nothing fancy, it's just, well, a loop cable.

Most large venues use XLR connectors for long cable runs. These are normally used with wired Mics. But, if you are using our wireless Mics, you may want or need to plug them into these XLR connectors.

Wireless Mics come with 1/4" standard jacks. So just plug the cable that comes with DAK's Mics into the 1/4" female jack at the back of these adapters and then you can plug directly into your XLR wall or mixing board jacks.

Order Male or Female - Very Important. Before ordering, look at the XLR connectors you will be plugging into. If there are 3 holes going in, they are female.

If there are 3 prongs sticking out, they are male.
You need to order the OPPOSITE gender so they will plug in. So if yours are male, buy female and if yours are female, buy male.

Want a longer Mic cable? Need to connect two PAs for more shared sound output? This 15' 1/4" male to 1/4" Male cable is your answer.

You'll find lots of uses for an extended cable. I've listed two that apply to our Mics and PAs below

Special Use For DAK No Cable Mics.
DAK's No cable Mics come with 48" cables to connect the receiver to your PA or other Mic input. Usually that's much more than you need. But if you need additional distance, just pick up some of these heavy duty 15' cables. You use them instead of the cables that come with the Mics. There's no loss and no problem, just added length.

Special Use for DAK's PA Systems.
DAK's PAs are perfect for groups up to 100-120 people. But what if you have a larger group? Well, we have wireless system to connect two or more PAs on the same frequency electronically. But if you already have 2 PAs and they aren't on the same frequency, then just plug this 15' heavy duty shielded cable into the REC out on one PA and to the AUX in on the 2nd and you'll get all the sound that's normally being broadcast from the first PA coming out of both PAs and you'll have separate volume control on the 2nd PA too. Very handy to have.

I never have enough cables. Every time I get in a new stereo component or want to connect my newest audio toy to my computer I was forever looking for the right cable or adapter to make it happen.

Over the years there have been dozens of times when I had to get in my car and head off to my neighborhood electronics store to get that cable or adapter.

Well about 10 years ago, I said no more. I simply bought all the cables I ever use and a whole bunch of adapters that I thought I might or might not ever use and I've thanked heaven a hundred times since when I'm hooking stuff up.

So I thought, why don't I create a special page of audio cables and adapters that you can pick and choose from and stock up too. You'll be so glad you did the next time you're hooking up that new X#A#@A toy that needs an adapter that's not included.

Plus I've put together a special collection of the cables, adapters and Ys that make my life easiest.

I call it my "For want of a nail, the kingdom was lost," essential cable collection. And it really is essential, not because I'm in the fun electronics business, but because I'm my own best customer and I buy new stuff just about every day. So enjoy.

P.S. If you're not old enough to remember the proverb about losing the kingdom, I looked it up and here it is.

"For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the battle was lost.
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
